Habits of Discussion

Talking is like playing on the harp; there is as much in laying the hands on the strings to stop their vibration as in twanging them to bring out their music.  ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

At the parent coffee on Tuesday morning, I spoke about the Habits of Discussion that we are teaching our students.  What are Habits of Discussion you may ask?  Well, last spring I went to a workshop in New Jersey to learn more about a particular reading program being used by some successful charter schools on the east coast.  In this workshop I was introduced to the Habits of Discussion.  Habits of Discussion are the things we want to teach our students so they can both learn to have intelligent conversations and learn to listen in order to be able to contribute to a discussion or conversation.  We are teaching these Habits of Discussion in all grades at this point.  Ideally, you start them in Kindergarten and 1st grade and they build as the students progress through the grades.  Below are the first four Habits of Discussion and how students would demonstrate them in the classroom.  These are things you can practice at home, as well.

Core Habit of Discussion
Ideal Student Actions
Listen and Talk only in turn
·         Track the speaker
·         Hands down when someone is speaking
·         Not interrupting
Speak Audibly
·         Students speak loudly and clearly
Speak in Complete Sentences
·         Restate the question in the response
·         No incomplete sentences
Interact Peer-to-Peer: direct answers to the group
·         Looking at every group member when giving an answer, not just the teacher

If you are picking up your child from school early, please make sure you leave enough time for packing up their belongings once they are called to the office.  We do not call students to the office until parents actually arrive for pick up, as we want them to miss as little instructional time as possible.  Also, please remember the left carpool lane changes to a pick up lane each day at 2:45.

Since we had school on Monday, our teachers made great connections with Presidents’ Day.  Kindergarten students talked about President Washington and Lincoln and made some images of them to hang in the hallway.  Second grade analyzed the similarities and differences between Washington and Lincoln and created Venn Diagrams to show those.

Tuesday was the 100th day of school.  This is a day of much excitement in grades K-2.  In math classes in these grades students keep track of the number of days in school as a counting and patterns exercise.  Different classes did interesting things to acknowledge the 100th day of school, as you can see from the pictures below.  From 100 thoughts of kindness in 1st grade to the 2nd grade things they want to do before they turn 100 years old, the hallways have hundreds of great things to see.

Have a wonderful week!

Pillar Week

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
 ~Leo Buscaglia

Welcome to the final day of Pillar Week!  It has been a truly enjoyable week with the Lower School students.  It was great to be able to speak to them each morning about the Pillar of the Day and talk about how our dress for the day represented it.  Today, students were given the opportunity to demonstrate their own knowledge and understanding of the Pillars.  Students were each given a Pillar sticker to give to another student on their own (if they saw a student demonstrating one of the Eagle Ridge Academy Pillars).  It was an opportunity for us to see where the students fall in their abilities to understand the Pillars and recognize those qualities in others.  It also went with our theme of the day of kindness and giving to others.  Remember to ask your children why they received a Pillar sticker when you see them come home with one.  Making that home/school connection really cements the importance of our Pillars.

Mr. Anderson has been busy sharing artwork in the Lower School.  He has changed our Lower School Office display to include 2nd Grade Printmaking.  He also added a display in the hallway just outside the Lower School Office.  Here we have some Kindergarten artwork based on a book they read called The Dot.  Enjoy the pictures below or stop in for an up close and personal visit with some of the art our Lower School students are creating.

3rd grade students have been studying the bones in the human body in science class.  Some of their skeletons are “hanging around” in the hallway outside Mrs. Rau’s classroom.

Just a reminder that the PTO Gala for Our Pillars in on Saturday, February 22nd at Olympic Hills Golf Club.  I look forward to seeing many of you there for a fun, festive evening!

Have a wonderful week!

Finally February...

“After all is said and done, more is said than done” ~ Aesop

Welcome to February!  It was so enjoyable to have a FULL week of school.  We have an even deeper appreciation of the PTO Playground Committee recess carts provided for each grade level.  It has given the students a variety of things to do during their recess time.  I’m sure Mother Nature will eventually relent and give us days warm enough to head outside again soon!

We drew Pillar Tickets for the month of January last Friday.  The winning students were able to have a snack with Steve, the custodian and visit some fun areas of the school with Steve and Mrs. Baier.  Below are some pictures of their adventure.  Next month's prize is lunch with the Lower School teacher of your choice.

January Winners
Hannah P. -1st Grade
Sriya P. -4th Grade
Elena R.- 1st Grade
Karin S.- 4th Grade
Vaishu S.- 3rd Grade

Due to the days we have missed for cold weather, the conference schedule has changed for spring conferences.  We now have school for all students on Thursday, March 27th and conferences starting after school.    Conferences times will be available between  4:00 and 8:00 on March 27th.   March 28th will not be a school day for students and teachers will conduct conferences between 7:30 and 3:30 that day.  Conference scheduling for the Lower School will be done through the online conference scheduling system.  The system will be available on March 19th and will close on March 26th.

February 22nd is the Annual PTO Gala.  It is a delightful affair and a great way to get to know more members of the Eagle Ridge Community while raising funds for the school.  The money raised this year will go towards literacy and technology.  The event will be held at Olympic Hills Golf Club in Eden Prairie.  The link below takes you to the PTO page where you can get more information and purchase tickets.  I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Eagle Ridge Academy will be having its first ever Historical Character Dress-Up Day on Friday, March 21st.The reason for having this is to give Lower School students a special day (since they do not celebrate homecoming and other US activities), but tie it into the curriculum in a meaningful way.  Each grade level chose specific themes or lists that their students could use for dressing up based on what they study.  More information will be coming from your child’s teacher on the specifics for the day.
